A numeric code the SEC assigns to classify a company's primary line of business, used across its filings and public databases. DiscoverIPO maps SIC codes to a smaller set of broad sectors (Tech, Biotech, Energy, and others) for filtering purposes.
SIC codes predate most modern industry taxonomies and can be broad or oddly specific depending on when a company first registered with the SEC, which is part of why DiscoverIPO groups them into a smaller set of readable sectors rather than showing the raw code — the code itself is more useful for cross-referencing SEC data directly than for browsing companies by industry.
